Picnic Thanks!
“Eating in the rain, but tasting the sunshine!” That is how my Dutch sister Edith described the Great Granville Picnic yesterday after she and I had posted comments back and forth on Facebook.
What a great way to describe exactly what took place on August 14, 2010. No threat of rain or potential winds could stop the community from taking part in this year’s picnic. Yes, there were tables without decorations, food or even the most important element…people! But this community came out and supported the picnic once again in spite of threats from wind and rain.
Ryan Wilkins, our first musician was on stage at 4pm and when he finished at 5pm the stage shut down for the next four hours. But the fun had just begun. The judges for the table-decorating contest climbed aboard golf carts and began searching for the best of the best for this year’s table decorating contest. At 6pm the kid’s games began. The Granville Chapel hosted games such as Chubby Bunny, Minute to Win it games, sack races, balloon toss and the most popular of them all, the pie eating contest. I’m not even sure the kids or parents cared that it was raining; they were having so much fun! Once the games were finished the crowd began to thin out a bit more, but you could see people under umbrellas, canopy’s and even trees enjoying themselves and hoping that the rain would subside in order for the main stage to open again. Finally at 9pm the lights were up, the sound system turned back on and Common Thread and the Recliners appeared on stage, happy to get a least an hour of performance time. I think I even saw Elvis! All in all I believe we had a very successful picnic for 2010!
What makes the Great Granville Picnic so great in my opinion is the support of each and every volunteer, organization, team sport and business that chooses to walk alongside me as we all organize this community event together.
Thank you once again for making the Great Granville Picnic a wonderful, end of the summer event, for families, friends and folks that travel from out of town. Your support is as generous as your picnic spirit!
Connecticut 1-4, you were amazing! Thanks for showing us how to hang in there!
